              Composing a Melody Part 2

In this lesson you will expand your 4 bar melody into an 8 bar phrase the given chord progression/bass line.

              1. Log into Noteflight
              2. Open the Noteflight file with the 8 bar chord progression/bass line - CLICK HERE to open. (The 1st 4 bars are new, the last 4 bars are what you used for the 1st Composing a Melody Assignment)
              3. Select the 1st 4 measures and COPY the bass line. (Position your mouse above the middle of the 1st measure until the grey bar appears above the measure. Click on the grey bar, then move your mouse to the last measure. While holding the shift button down, click on the grey bar above the last measure. All of the measure should now be selected. Select COPY from the Edit menu, or push Ctrl-C on the keyboard.)
              4. Open your composition from the 1st Create a Melody Assignment in Noteflight.
              5. Select "Save a Copy" from the Edit menu.
              6. Give your composition a new title.
              7. PASTE the bass line from your teacher's file at the BEGINNING of your composition. (Click in the 1st measure, then select PASTE from the Edit menu, or push Ctrl-V on the keyboard.) Now you should have a total of 8 measures with your existing melody in the last 4 bars.
              8. Click on the double bar line in the middle of your composition and change it to a single bar line.
              9. Using any combination of whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, sixteenth notes, and dotted notes, compose a melody in the treble clef portion of the score. TIPS: borrow ideas from your original melody. The idea is to make the new part of your composition sound like it fits your original melody. Try using repetition, simple patterns, rests, and anything else that makes it musical and interesting. Make sure the melody is realistically performable. Ask yourself... would you be able to sing/play your melody? CLICK HERE to view an example composed by Mr. Hall.
              10. If you want, you can make improvements and edits to your original melody. However, try to stay true to your orignal idea. If you made a good effort on your 1st melody assignment, you shouldn't need to completely recreate the last 4 bars of this assignment.
              11. Add a dynamics, articulations, and/or phrase markings to your melody to make it more complete, musical, and professional.
              12. When you're finished, share your composition with your teacher. (Click on the SHARING menu. Select "Anyone can view this score". Then click the copy button to copy the web link for your composition. Paste this link into the Self-Evaluation/Reflection Form listed below.)
              13. Complete the Self-Evaluation form listed below.
              14. IF YOU HAVE EXTRA TIME... You can try orchestrating your composition for your instrument, trombone, trombone and tuba. CLICK HERE See Mr. Hall's Example. I made several minor edits for my orchestration. Be sure to save your orchestration as a new copy so you don't change your assignment for this lesson. 1. I changed the key to Bb (to make it more playable). 2. I transposed the parts down a whole step (to make the parts fit the new key signature). 3. I modified the trombone/tuba parts just a bit to make them more interesting. (Hint: to create a tuba part, make a trombone part and change the name to tuba). Have fun!
